Most programs offer inspiration. HMI offers infrastructure. The difference is not in the quality of the message - it is in the consistency of the system that delivers it. Every layer of the HMI mentorship model is designed to ensure that development is not dependent on a single great mentor or a single great session. It is built into the structure itself.
At the core of HMI is a centralized leadership model led by Dr. Gregory Haughton. Weekly live sessions are delivered to all mentees, providing standardized leadership principles, consistent frameworks, and unified messaging across every institution. This ensures alignment, quality control, and that every athlete receives the same high-level leadership foundation regardless of where they compete.
HMI operates through a trained network of mentors who extend the system beyond the central delivery. Each mentor is carefully selected and vetted, trained in the HMI mentorship methodology, provided with structured weekly protocols, and held accountable for delivery and outcomes. Mentors are not left to improvise. They operate within a defined system that ensures consistency and effectiveness, at every institution, in every cohort.
After central sessions, student-athletes transition into structured breakout groups led by their dedicated mentor. This is where concepts are applied, conversations become personal, accountability is reinforced, and behavior begins to change. Each session includes guided discussion, reflection prompts, real-life application, and peer accountability. This is where leadership moves from theory to behavior, and where the mentor relationship becomes transformational.
High-impact development requires individual attention. HMI includes targeted one-on-one mentorship for high-need student-athletes, leadership-track individuals, and athletes facing performance or personal challenges. This layer allows for personalized guidance, behavioral correction, goal alignment, and the deeper trust and accountability that group settings cannot replicate. This is where the most significant individual transformations occur.
Every session is guided by a structured leadership curriculum focused on discipline and consistency, accountability and ownership, emotional intelligence and self-control, decision-making under pressure, and identity and purpose beyond sport. Each session is pre-structured, mentor-guided, and outcome-driven. This removes randomness and ensures development is intentional - not left to the quality of any single mentor's improvisation.
